6 DAYS TREKKING VALLEY OF AZZADENE ASCENT TO
MOUNT TOUBKAL
Embark on a thrilling 6-day trekking journey through the stunning landscapes of Morocco’s Atlas Mountains, culminating in an ascent to the summit of Mount Toubkal, North Africa’s highest peak. Begin your adventure in the scenic Valley of Azzadene, surrounded by lush valleys, traditional Berber villages, and rugged mountain trails. Along the way, enjoy breathtaking views, experience local Berber culture, and prepare for the exhilarating climb to Toubkal’s summit. Perfect for adventure enthusiasts.
– Upon arrival at Marrakech airport, you’ll be met by our local guide. After the transfer to Imlil, you’ll
have the opportunity to stop at the Asni souk if it’s a market day. Once in Imlil, you’ll enjoy a
traditional Berber dinner. After dinner, you’ll have free time to explore this charming Berber village,
enjoy a mint tea and get to know the local culture and people.
– After a traditional breakfast, we get ready at 9 a.m. to hand over our bags, which will be loaded onto
mules taken care of by our support team. With our expert guide, we set off in the direction of
Aguerssioual, along a path overlooking the river. This route takes us first to Taddert, marking the
start of our trek into the Azzadene valley.
– From Aguerssioual, after a short stretch of track, we take a path that leads us to Matate, before
passing the Col de Tizi Oudidte at an altitude of 2,219 metres. The views are breathtaking, revealing
the majestic mountains and surrounding Berber villages. We pass through a spectacular forest dotted
with conifers, where the green of the trees contrasts with the basalt rocks and red earth.
– Before reaching the pass, our team awaits us with tea and a carefully prepared traditional Berber
lunch. After this invigorating break, we continue our descent to the village of Aït Aissa, admiring the
multicolored beauty of the valley.
– We then continue on a short uphill section to Tizi Ousem at 1,850 m, a pretty Berber village where
we’ll spend the night. After a tasty dinner prepared by our team, we’ll have the chance to wander the
steep streets and enjoy the local architecture and warm hospitality of the locals.
(6 to 7 hours’ walk)
– We rise early for breakfast before setting off at five in the morning, as this day is crucial for our
altitude acclimatization and to prepare for the ascent of Toubkal.
– The climb begins from the Azzadene valley, where a demanding route awaits us. After leaving Tizi
Oussem, we quickly gain altitude. Passing through Azib Imnouatts, a picturesque path winds through
conifers to the Azib Tamsoult Refuge, with its charming cultivated terraces. We then continue on to
the Cascades Ighoulidene, and once past them, the path rises to the left, leading to the Rocher de
Tiguinuria. This winding ascent, with a 600-meter vertical drop, finally takes us to the Col
d’Aguelzim at 3,650 meters, the highest point of the day.
– We enjoy a picnic at the pass, surrounded by breathtaking views of the Atlas mountain range. After
this break, we descend directly to the Neltner hut at 3,207 meters, where we’ll be sharing a bunk-bed
room with other comrades. On arrival, our team prepares us a comforting cup of tea, followed by
dinner to regain our strength. A good night’s sleep awaits us, as the next day we take on the
challenge of conquering the roof of North Africa.
(9 to 10 hours’ walking on the most technical and beautiful day)
– We have to get up very early, at four in the morning, to begin our ascent. First, we climb to the
Akhbi n’Tizi crevasse, to the left of the refuge, at 3,700 meters. From here, a wide couloir leads us
gently up to the Col du Toubkal at 3,950 metres, where we’ll have the chance to admire a spectacular
sunrise.
– From the Col, we continue our ascent along the Toubkal ridge, taking us to the summit at 4,167
meters. After a three-and-a-half-hour hike, we’ll pause to rest, picnic and take photos of the
exceptional views of the Atlas mountain range, verdant valleys and Berber villages. We’ll also enjoy
panoramic views of Djbel Siroura at 3,500 metres, known as the gateway to the desert.
– We then descend for just under two hours to the refuge for a short rest, before continuing our descent
to the Marabout Sidi Chamharouch at 2,350 meters. This site, much frequented by pilgrims, is also
known as the Sultan of the Devil. Here, our team will be waiting for us with comforting tea and a
rejuvenating meal.
– After recovering our strength, we’ll take an easier trail down to Imlil. Depending on weather
conditions, if we were unable to reach the summit on Day 4, we can attempt the ascent on Day 5 and
return to Imlil in the afternoon.
(5 to 6 hours’ impressive ascent and 3 to 4 hours’ descent to Imlil)
– If we have successfully climbed Toubkal, this day is free. We enjoy a gentle stroll through the
Imenane Valley. There’s no need to get up very early; after a hearty breakfast at the Riad, we take the
vehicle up to the Col de Tizi n’Tamatert at an altitude of 2,280 meters, through the verdant valley.
– From the pass, a winding path leads us to Tinerhourhine, then on to Ikkiss. From here, we climb to
Col Tizi n’Aguersioual. Before arriving at the pass, our team welcomes us as usual with a welcome
tea and a Berber lunch.
– After lunch, we take a direct route down to Imlil. The afternoon is free to enjoy a rejuvenating
Arabian bath at the Imlil hammam, shop for souvenirs of your stay, or simply relax with a cool drink
in one of the picturesque establishments.
